3. “So, are you American or Canadian?”

Don’t be offended if someone thinks you’re Canadian when you’re actually American of vice versa. Our accents sound the same to the majority of Europeans I’ve come across and they are genuinely curious where you’re from. Typically this is a great conversation starter and I have met some awesome people because of this question. Again, don’t get mad; just calmly explain to them where you’re from and then proceed to refute the stereotypes they have of your home state, country, etc. There are plenty of stereotypes for people from (New) Jersey.
